I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 16 years of experience. I am also former Naval Officer of 6 years who provided mental health to active duty and their families. I utilize Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) (i.e, mindfulness and values-focused) as my baseline approach and hypnotherapy, Jungian Psychotherapy and Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) to help with Trauma. These together make a great team to aide you in your healing process. I believe in developing a healthy Client-Therapist relationship to fully support any other approaches.
I grew up a carpenter’s son and followed his example in my early adulthood. By my mid 20’s I began working with others by teaching guitar, after school sports, yoga, and meditation while continuing to work as a handyman. From 2012-2014 I was fortunate enough to be able to teach High School Psychology classes that included Adolescent Social Psychology, Intro to Psychology, and Positive Psychology. For my practicum in 2012 I spent a year at James Lick High School in East San Jose, CA working with individuals and groups. From 2013-2016 I was a community-based therapist meeting clients in their homes, at their schools, or in the community. I provided individual and family support throughout Santa Clara County. This was an invaluable training that allowed me to see what people would talk about in session, since I would be in their homes with them and often see the issues firsthand. In 2017 I worked at Brightquest Treatment Center in La Mesa, CA. This was an incredible experience. I worked in this residential facility with folks with severe psychiatric disorders that often also involved addiction. The intense nature of the treatment and regular interaction with clients provided a unique learning experience and genuine connections. I learned a great deal from the residential Milieu Therapy approach.
I also had the opportunity to work as a Military Family Life Counselor, supporting military service members and their families. I feel that I learned a lot and, since I was a Navy brat, I derived a great deal of meaning being able to give back to service members in this way.
Since 2018 I have been working in private practice helping children, teens, adults, and families in person and online. I continue to work on my professional development by studying, taking trainings, consulting with colleagues, and working to practice what I learn in a balanced way.
I have a Master’s degree in Family Therapy and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with specialization in Depth Psychology. That means I’m going to work both with your responses to the external system that you live in and with the deep psychological parts of you that go back to your childhood. Finally, I am certified in Hypnosis and have several years of meditation and mindfulness training, and also use those perspectives to help my clients.
I appreciate and honor a person’s desire to begin their therapeutic journey. I believe a collaborative therapeutic relationship built on trust, respect, and honesty creates a healthy open space for people to grow. I am passionate about helping individuals and families increase healthy behaviors while decreasing patterns that disrupt them from enjoying their lives. I received my Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, from Antioch University.
Because of my past personal and professional experience, I typically work with people who are "finding themselves," which can occur at any age, especially after a big change or loss or life event. I specialize in grief, bereavement, sexuality, and spirituality, and often my clients have some sort of religious background or are artists/makers/creatives. I work really well with sensitive men, strong women, and people who feel stuck or misunderstood.
I am a double board certified (in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine) adult psychiatrist.
